How do I become an actor?
There are all sorts of ways to become an
actor-- participating in your school's
drama program, taking acting classes and
workshops, and trying out for community
theatre are all excellent ways to start.
Remember, acting is a tough job, so
practice your craft! And it's also
important to find people to work who
will give you support and feedback.
Acting is a craft, so there's always
something more to learn.
If you're
serious about becoming an actor, you
should think about finding an agent.
There are all sorts of agents too,
including some who specialize in
background performers. Background work
(or being an "extra") is a great way to
start out in the business. Your agent
will submit your picture and resume
whenever there's a casting call. Have
your parents/guardians check the
phonebook or search online for an agent
near you.
How do
I become a musician?
If this were an easy question to answer,
there would be a whole lot more working
musicians in the world! It's one thing
to become a musician, but another to
become a successful commercial recording
artist. Being a musician requires
nothing more than the desire, an
instrument and hours and hours of
practice. Take lessons, learn from
friends, or if you've got a good ear,
try to pick it up yourself. After you
learn a thing or two, if you think you
have a special talent for singing,
songwriting, or playing an instrument,
get yourself out there. Play in front of
an audience to get feedback. Could be
friends, family, at a school assembly,
or at a club (open stage nights are a
good start!). If people like what you've
got, keep at it.
If you're
determined to bring your talents to the
world, you might want to consider
recording a demo CD to give out to
booking agents and A&R reps from record
companies. Recording a demo doesn't need
to be expensive, and it can pay off in
spades. Most importantly, if you're
serious about pursuing a career in
music, don't be discouraged by negative
feedback. Instead, take it as
"constructive criticism" and keep
working on it. In the meantime, don't
forget that pursuing a career in music
as a live performing act is risky
business at best. So, if you don't
become the next superstar, there are
many musical career paths to explore,
from sound engineer (recording music for
CDs, TV and/or film), to music teacher,
to songwriter (selling your songs to be
performed by others), to writing
commercial jingles, and the list goes
on. One of the great things about being
a musician is that you can also just do
it for a hobby. Good luck!
